I filed my water damage homeowners insurance claim. Now what?

You are one step (one very important step) closer

to getting your home back to pre-loss condition!

  • If you haven't already, print this form and begin filling it out. Keep it in a place you can get to easily for future reference. It will help you throughout your claims process.  Click here for the form.
  • It's a good idea to email or call your contractor and mitigation company to provide them with your claim details. This will make it easier for them to send your insurance company the information they require.
    - Claim Number
    - Adjuster Name, Email Address, and Phone Number

    Prepare yourself:
  • Depending on the severity of your home water damage, getting you back to pre-loss condition could take some time. There will likely be representatives from multiple companies in your home at various times and points of job progress. I suggest you ask for business cards for every person/company to make it easier for you to keep track of who's who and what part they play in this process.
  • Getting your home back to pre-loss condition will take time and it will likely be much longer than you anticipate. At some point throughout the process, you will likely become frustrated or angry with whichever company is in your home doing the work. What can go wrong usually does in the construction world. It's the nature of the business. My suggestion is to focus on keeping communication open and document as much as you can.
  • Grab yourself a notebook so you can document happenings and new materials you choose as replacements for materials that must be discarded.
Here's some additional information I would keep up with:
    - Who promised you what and when
    - Who you call, why, when, and the outcome of that call
    - Note issues you see with work done, if any, and who you communicated that information with. Taking a photo of what needs extra attention is also a good idea.

The following information is from my personal experience working for a mitigation company and now Principle Construction.
  • Generally, the mitigation company locates all wet material and determines whether it can be dried or if it must be removed. They will remove and dispose of non-salvageable materials and dry what can be dried. They will also send all information to your insurance company along with moisture readings and photos of the damage.
  • The contractor is who puts your home back together after the mitigation company does their part. Click this link to be directed to the services page of our website
